Description

This is a vintage cabinet card circa 1900 of CORSE PAYTON measuring 6 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ with his name and Corse Payton Co. at bottom. The photo is by Launey of New York.
Payton was born in Iowa, joined a travelling circus, returned home to organize Corse Payton’s Comedy Co. with his brother, travelled the mid west during the late 1800s providing repertory theatre to small town opera houses, music academies etc. He moved to Brooklyn NY in 1900, purchased a theatre which he named Payton’s Lee Avenue where he provided 2 shows daily and originated the 10-20-30 cent shows. Mary Pickford, the Gish sisters, Ed Wynn etc. began careers here. He himself was known as “America’s Best Bad Actor.” He also built Keeney’s, later Schubert’s Theatre in Newark and returned to stock theatre at the Carlton which he later leased as a motion picture theatre. He died in 1934.
Very light agewear only; EX condition.
Thank you.
